The price of Tesla Semi electric trucks turned out to be significantly higher than announced, but still lower than competitors.
Tesla plans to bring its electric semi-trucks into production
In 2026 Tesla intends to begin serial production of the Semi electric cruiser at a dedicated plant in Nevada. For several years now, such tractors have been assembled in small batches and sold to a limited group of customers, with the latest model priced at $290 000.
How prices have changed
- 2017 – when the Tesla Semi was presented, the plan was to offer:
- a version with a range of 480 km for $150 000
- a version with a range of 800 km for $180 000
- Taking inflation into account over almost eight years, those prices are roughly equivalent to about $240 000 today.
Nevertheless the company set a price higher by $50 000, but it remains more competitive compared with similar models.
- In the United States in 2024 a comparable electric tractor cost around $435 000, while diesel competitors were about $110 000 cheaper.

- The lower version (520 km) can be used on “short” routes and charged at night at logistics centers.
- The higher version (800 km) supports express charging at 1.2 MW, reducing downtime on long trips.
Efficiency and prospects
Both Semi versions consume about 1.7 kWh per mile (≈ 1.6 km) and are equipped with three electric motors totaling 800 kW. Theoretically they are ready for autonomous operation.
Considering current diesel fuel and electricity prices in the U.S., an electric Semi can recoup the cost difference within four years of active use, after which owners will start saving money.
Thus Tesla continues to promote its electric cruisers as a cost‑effective option for long-haul transport, combining a higher price with energy‑efficiency benefits and the possibility of autonomous operation.
