How to Calculate Dog Food Portions

Daily caloric needs are calculated using the formula: RER × Activity Factor, where RER (Resting Energy Requirement) = 70 × (body weight in kg)^0.75

Activity Multipliers

  • Puppy (0-4 months): 3.0× RER (rapid growth)
  • Puppy (4-12 months): 2.0× RER (continued growth)
  • Adult, inactive: 1.2-1.4× RER
  • Adult, moderate: 1.6× RER
  • Adult, active: 1.8-2.0× RER
  • Working/athletic dogs: 2.0-5.0× RER
  • Senior dogs: 1.2-1.4× RER (reduced metabolism)

Food Type Calorie Density

  • Dry kibble: 300-450 kcal per 100g
  • Wet/canned: 70-150 kcal per 100g
  • Raw food (BARF): 100-200 kcal per 100g
  • Homemade cooked: 120-200 kcal per 100g

Feeding Guidelines by Age

  • Puppies (8 weeks - 6 months): 3-4 meals per day
  • Puppies (6-12 months): 2-3 meals per day
  • Adult dogs: 1-2 meals per day
  • Senior dogs: 2 smaller meals per day

Body Condition Adjustments

  • Underweight: Increase portions by 10-20%
  • Ideal weight: Maintain current portions
  • Overweight: Reduce portions by 10-20%
  • Obese: Reduce portions by 20-30% + veterinary consultation

Important Considerations

  • Water: Always provide fresh water (50-60ml per kg body weight daily)
  • Treats: Should not exceed 10% of daily calories
  • Monitoring: Weigh your dog monthly and adjust portions
  • Breed differences: Some breeds have higher/lower metabolisms
  • Health conditions: Diabetes, kidney disease require special diets

Signs of Proper Feeding

  • ✅ Ribs palpable but not visible
  • ✅ Visible waist when viewed from above
  • ✅ Abdominal tuck when viewed from side
  • ✅ Shiny coat and healthy skin
  • ✅ Consistent energy levels
  • ✅ Normal, firm stools
