About this tool: Gear Ratio Calculator

Calculate an ideal gear ratio and output speed from tooth counts and input rpm.

The driven-to-driver tooth ratio determines the ideal speed reduction. A larger driven gear turns more slowly and has a greater ideal torque advantage. The calculation assumes two external gears and ignores friction, transmission losses and multi-stage trains.

How the calculation works

i = Z₂/Z₁; n₂ = n₁/i

Worked example

Driver teeth
20
Driven teeth
60
Input speed, rpm
1200
i = 3; n₂ = 400 rpm

What affects precision and input format?

Floating-point results are rounded for display. Keep the units shown in the input labels; decimal points and decimal commas are accepted.

Where are the calculations performed?

The calculation runs in your browser. You can use the tool without installing software.
