Body Frame Adjustments
Body frame size significantly affects ideal weight:

BMI-Based Healthy Weight
The healthy weight range based on BMI 18.5-24.9:
Min Weight = 18.5 × (height in meters)²
Max Weight = 24.9 × (height in meters)²
Example (175 cm / 1.75 m):
Min = 18.5 × 1.75² = 18.5 × 3.0625 = 56.7 kg (125 lb)
Max = 24.9 × 1.75² = 24.9 × 3.0625 = 76.3 kg (168 lb)

History of IBW Formulas
Why so many formulas?
- Devine (1974): Developed for drug dosing calculations in pharmacology
- Hamwi (1964): Created for quick calculations by dietitians

- All based on data from life insurance tables from 1940s-1960s
- Primarily developed for Caucasian populations
Limitations of IBW Formulas
- Don't account for muscle mass: Bodybuilders may be "overweight" but very healthy
- Ignore body composition: 150 lb of muscle ≠ 150 lb of fat
- Height-only based: Don't consider frame size, bone density
- Population bias: May not apply well to non-Caucasian populations
- Age effects: Don't account for age-related muscle loss
- No individual health factors: Medical conditions, medications, etc.
Better Health Indicators
IBW is just one metric. Better indicators include:
- Waist circumference: Men <40", Women <35" (better predictor of heart disease than BMI)

Special Populations
Athletes:

💡 Pro Tip: The concept of ONE ideal weight is a myth! Your body has a RANGE of healthy weights, typically 10-15 kg (20-30 lb) wide. All four major IBW formulas can give different results by 5-10 kg - that's how much individual variation exists! And here's what's crucial: being 5-10 kg above "ideal" weight but having good metabolic markers (normal blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar) and being physically active is MUCH healthier than being at "ideal" weight but sedentary with poor diet. The "fit but fat" phenomenon is real - studies show metabolically healthy obese people have similar mortality to normal weight people! Focus on body composition, not just weight. A 70 kg muscular person looks completely different from a 70 kg person with high body fat. The scale doesn't tell the whole story. And remember: these formulas were developed for WHITE populations in the 1960s-80s - they may not apply well to you if you're not in that demographic. Use them as a ROUGH guide, not gospel!
