Spaces and hyphens are ignored. ISBN-10 uses a modulo-11 checksum and may end in X; ISBN-13 uses alternating weights 1 and 3. A valid ISBN-10 converts to a 978-prefixed ISBN-13. The 979 prefix has no ISBN-10 counterpart. Checksum validation does not look up a publication or registration.
