New life from fans: Star Wars First Assault returns after 13 years

The game that was cancelled in 2013 along with the well-known multiplayer shooter *Star Wars 1313* has been revived thanks to enthusiasts.

How it all began
*Star Wars: First Assault* – the first-person shooter from LucasArts that was slated for launch at the end of 2012 via Xbox Live. Planned beta tests never took place due to Lucasfilm’s acquisition by Disney and the subsequent breakup of the LucasArts studio.

Restoration by modders
The decade-long “pause” ended when a group of *Star Wars: Battlefront* modders found an old beta version of the game. They restored it and organized their own testing (a one-and-a-half-hour video from iamashaymin can be watched below).

Fans can now try the restored version through the project’s official Discord server, but it is still unknown how long Disney will allow such an initiative to continue.

What the game looks like
Compiled gameplay footage shows that the build looks fairly polished. This is not surprising: before cancellation the game was almost finished – only about $10 000 remained for certification.

Plot and gameplay
*Star Wars: First Assault* promised to transport players into the atmosphere of the classic Star Wars trilogy: stormtroopers, rebels, team deathmatches on the map of Tatooine and Bespin.

The game was positioned as a new chapter in the development of *Star Wars: Battlefront*. It was planned for release in summer 2013, followed by a second part in 2014 and a full Battlefront 3 in 2015 – but those plans never materialized.
