Amazon acquired the satellite company Globalstar for $11.57 billion and entered into a joint‑venture agreement with Apple
Amazon will buy satellite communications operator Global Star for $11.57 billion
During negotiations that became known two weeks ago, Amazon announced its intention to acquire the U.S. operator Global Star. The deal was valued at $11.57 billion. The acquisition will allow the company to expand its growing satellite communications segment and strengthen its position in the battle against SpaceX’s Starlink service.
How stock prices changed
* Global Star – after the announcement of negotiations, shares rose 6 %.
* After Amazon officially announced the purchase, they jumped another 9 %.
* Last year, Global Star’s price almost doubled, and since the beginning of the year it has risen about 12 %.
* Amazon shares also received a modest increase—about 1 %.
What Amazon gets
Amazon will gain access to a network of roughly twenty Global Star satellites. This will give the company a competitive edge against Starlink, which currently has more than 10,000 spacecraft in orbit.
* Global Star shareholders can choose:
* $90 in cash per share, or
* 0.3210 common Amazon shares for each Global Star security.
Amazon’s future plans
* By 2029 the company plans to launch about 3,200 satellites into low Earth orbit.
* The first 1,600 spacecraft should be operational by July 2026.
* At present Amazon manages a cluster of more than 200 satellites and is preparing to start providing internet services this year.
For comparison: Starlink already serves over 9 million customers worldwide.
What Global Star offers
* Voice communication, data transfer, and asset tracking for government agencies, businesses, and individuals.
* Emergency satellite communications operator and device‑finding functions (iPhone, Apple Watch).
* Plans to deploy a network of 54 new satellites for Apple, which invested $1.5 billion in Global Star.
Deal closing timeline
If regulators approve the acquisition and Global Star completes all planned launch milestones, the deal should close in 2027.
