Amazon plans to create a marketplace for licensed materials for training artificial intelligence
Amazon is preparing a platform for licensing content in AI
The question of data sources for training artificial intelligence models remains one of the sharpest issues in the industry. To resolve this conflict of interest, companies are increasingly entering agreements to license materials. In this context, Amazon has already announced its intention to create its own platform where publishers and AI developers can meet and negotiate collaboration.
What the company says
Amazon representatives held meetings with leaders of major publishing houses. At the meetings they explained plans to launch the platform, according to The Information. The company did not deny this information but has not yet disclosed details.
In an interview for TechCrunch a company representative noted:
> “Amazon is building long‑term and innovative relationships with publishers across many segments of our business – from AWS to retail, advertising, AGI, and Alexa. We are constantly implementing joint innovations to better serve our customers, but we cannot provide specific details about this initiative at this time.”
Why it matters
Amazon will not be the first tech giant to offer such a service. Earlier Microsoft launched Publisher Content Marketplace (PCM) – a platform designed for:
* providing publishers with a “new stream of revenue” and a transparent licensing economic model;
* giving AI developers large‑scale access to premium content.
At present most AI development companies operate independently. For example, OpenAI directly licensed material from Associated Press, Vox Media, News Corp, and The Atlantic.
Current challenges
Despite these initiatives, copyright litigation over training data for AI continues to rise, and lawmakers are constantly proposing new regulatory solutions.
Publishers are also concerned that automatic summaries and search results (e.g., in Google) reduce traffic to their sites. In such an environment a content‑exchange model through a marketplace is viewed as a more sustainable business model compared to direct licensing agreements. This could help publishers increase revenue as the AI industry continues to grow.
