Server CPU demand is rising thanks to AI – AMD overtakes Intel

At recent quarterly conferences, Intel and AMD executives spoke in unison: during the AI boom period, demand for data‑center processors is accelerating rapidly. For AMD this was a historic moment – the company surpassed its major competitor in server CPU revenue for the first time.

In particular, AMD increased its server processor revenue by more than 50 %, reaching a record level. CEO Lisa Su highlighted three key CPU use cases:

1. General computing
2. GPU pairing
3. Accelerating AI agent workloads

The last item is now driving the greatest demand growth in the server segment.

How the CPU‑to‑GPU ratio changes
Earlier, according to AMD’s head, the CPU‑to‑GPU ratio in AI infrastructure was roughly 1 : 4–8. Now a single GPU often corresponds to exactly one CPU, and in some specialized configurations there are even more CPUs than GPUs. Intel CEO Lip‑Bu Tan confirmed these observations.

UBS analysts note:

* In inference for traditional AI systems, 70–80 % of the compute load falls on the GPU.
* When moving to agent solutions, the share of load on the CPU rises to almost 100 %.
* The number of CPU cores per GPU during model training ranges from 8 to 12, and in inference from 16 to 24.
* For agent tasks this figure can reach 80–120 cores per GPU.

Thus, demand for central processors during inference and agent workloads increases five‑to‑tenfold compared with model training.

Impact of Arm‑compatible architectures
As CPU needs grow, the role of Arm‑compatible solutions strengthens. Competitors to Intel and AMD are not only Arm clients but also the British holding that recently unveiled AGI server processors.

* AMD – thanks to x86 compatibility, multithreading, and a large core count, is better suited for agent workloads.
* Intel – attempts to catch up with its Coral Rapids family, but AMD and Arm remain stronger.

In short, amid rapid AI‑market growth, server CPUs are becoming increasingly sought after, and AMD has already proven its ability to lead in this segment.
