Analysts explained why sales of PlayStation exclusives on PC are falling more and more sharply
Why Porting PlayStation Exclusives to PC Causes Sales Decline
GamesIndustry.biz, drawing on research from analytics firm Newzoo, explains why Sony is choosing to abandon porting its hits to personal computers.
How It All Began
In 2020, Sony first began porting exclusive PlayStation console games to PC. The new versions were released several years after the original launch. This approach gave PC gamers access to masterpieces such as *The Last of Us*, *Marvel’s Spider‑Man*, *Horizon* and *God of War*.
What Newzoo Data Showed
- Audience Decline
Delays in releasing ported games mean their share among PC users is significantly lower than that of multi‑platform projects from competitors.
- Numerical Gap
In the first three months after a PC release, ported games typically attract only about 13 % of their console audience, whereas comparable AAA titles from other companies reach roughly 44 %.
- Gradual Drop in Interest
With each new release, Sony’s share on PC diminishes over time. The exception is *Ghost of Tsushima*, where the figure is higher.
> “The main takeaway is that release timing seriously impacts engagement. When a PC version comes out years after the console, most of the initial demand has already been met on the primary platform,” Newzoo analysts note.
What This Means for Sony
Bloomberg reports that due to declining sales, the company will decide to stop porting single‑player PlayStation exclusives to PC. *Ghost of Yotei*, *Saros*, *Marvel’s Wolverine* and other future hits will remain available only on PS5.
Thus, the delay in porting becomes a key factor reducing Sony’s commercial success in the personal computer segment.
