Apple has postponed the release of the next Vision Pro to 2028, focusing instead on smart glasses and AI-powered devices.

Apple continues work on an AR headset, but release dates do not promise sooner news

* New product in the works:

The successor to Vision Pro (current price – $3499) is expected to appear only in two years. Apple has redirected most of the team that worked on mixed‑reality devices toward developing smart glasses and wearable AI devices.

* Technological focus:

According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, the company continues researching new materials and technologies with a view to eventually releasing a lighter and more affordable closed headset. However, active development of a product like Vision Air was cancelled last year.

* Team priorities:

The main emphasis is on smart glasses. Former members of the Vision Products Group (the division responsible for Vision Pro) are now working on this initiative, and some engineers are busy refining Siri, creating AirPods with cameras, and integrating an AI “cool‑on”.

* Market context:

After the launch of Vision Pro in 2024, the device did not achieve mass adoption due to its high price. Last year Apple updated the headset by replacing it with a more powerful Apple M5 chip, but demand remains limited.

Thus, while Apple continues to invest in AR technologies, upcoming releases are likely to be tied to smart glasses, and a full new headset may only appear in a couple of years.
