Apple Music will mark tracks created with the help of artificial intelligence
Apple Music launches an AI-generated music tagging system
Apple Music announced a new way to identify tracks and albums that use AI. Record labels and distributors will now be able to mark their uploaded material as “fully” or “partially” AI‑generated.
How it works
Earlier, Apple sent emails to partners detailing the plan to roll out an expanded set of metadata. In addition to traditional fields (track title, album, genre, artist, etc.), special tags will be added to indicate AI content. Distributors can manually apply these marks when uploading a track.
Why it matters
Listeners are actively discussing the need for such transparency on social media and music forums. The current system relies on voluntary metadata entry, so whether a label indicates AI usage depends on them. A similar approach is already in place at Spotify; other platforms (e.g., Deezer) use their own tools to detect AI involvement, but precise identification remains a challenging task.
Thus, Apple Music expands its metadata capabilities to make information about the provenance of musical works more open and accessible to audiences.
