Apple plans to introduce advertising in Maps this summer.
Apple plans to add advertising to the Maps app
According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, the company intends to embed ad content directly into its mapping application. An official announcement of this change is expected later this month, and iPhone users will see the first ads in the summer.
How the new ads will work
It appears that the ad format will resemble what Google Maps and Yelp use: brands and retail chains can bid for ad placement on specific search queries. Unlike some other services, advertising in Google Maps typically does not irritate users, so there is reason to believe Apple will adopt a similar approach.
Impact on Apple’s revenue
Ad revenues are expected to significantly boost the company’s service business, which already brings in about $100 billion per year. This segment accounts for roughly 25% of Apple’s total revenue but faces growing regulatory requirements for the App Store platform both short‑term and long‑term.
Internal discussion status
Apple has not commented on its plans to advertise in Maps yet. However, it is known that the idea has been under consideration since last year. Rumors about a possible ad launch have surfaced since 2022. At present Apple already displays ads in the App Store and the News app, so adding similar content to its mapping service should not trigger sharp user reactions.
