Apple will allow the iPhone to automatically split a restaurant bill by recognizing a photo of the receipt
Apple is preparing a new bill-splitting feature for iOS 27
Apple continues to develop services that make users’ everyday lives more convenient. With the release of iOS 27, the company plans to add an interesting personal finance tool—splitting a receipt by photo.
What’s new
* Photo tagging of receipts
After the update, users will be able to open a snapshot of a restaurant bill and manually highlight expense lines that belong to each diner.
* Payment requests
Selected amounts will automatically be sent to the user’s contact list via Messages or Wallet, where the recipient can quickly confirm the payment.
* Integration with Apple Cash and Wallet
The feature will work in tandem with the Apple Cash app for direct transfers between users. In Wallet, digital passes for events, gyms, and even keys for rooms or cars (if the infrastructure supports such integration) can be stored.
* Apple Watch support
Users will be able to approve payments right from their smart watches without opening an iPhone.
Why it matters
Such solutions are already available in third‑party apps—Splitwise, Tab, and Settle Up. Introducing its own tool will strengthen Apple’s position in the financial services segment and make bill splitting even simpler and safer.
A young audience accustomed to instant payments and digital passes is likely to appreciate the convenience of this feature.
Bottom line:
iOS 27 will add the ability to photograph a receipt, tag expenses by participant, and automatically request payment through Wallet or Messages. This not only simplifies bill splitting but also expands Apple Cash and Wallet’s capabilities in digital payments and pass management.
