Apple will postpone the launch of its smart home display because it is not ready to include the Siri feature
Apple is preparing for a busy “anniversary” year, but delays in Siri development could postpone the launch of its smart display
In official statements from Apple’s leadership, it emphasizes that 2025 will be rich with new products. Nevertheless Bloomberg reports problems with the voice assistant that are expected to delay the release of the home display.
Siri delay → J490 delay
- Original plan: The smart‑home device (codenamed J490) was supposed to launch in spring 2025.
- Shifts: First moved to March this year, now to September.
- Reason: The display and Siri support are postponed until the same time when a new version of the voice assistant is expected to debut.
Technically the device has been ready for several months, but Apple does not consider the market “clean” without a full Siri variant.
What is J490?
Feature | Description
Screen | 7‑inch tablet with square aspect ratio.
Stand | Hemispherical base with speaker or wall mount.
Function | Smart‑home control center.
Interface | Similar to Apple Watch: swipe through changing app icons.
Face recognition | Allows loading user’s personalized settings.
OS | Adapted tvOS 27 (if no new Siri, could use tvOS 26).
What else is being developed
- Wearable AI devices: pendant, cameras, AirPods, and smart glasses.
- Timeline: They will appear after a Siri update. Apple aims to bring Siri to the iPhone 18 Pro launch in September.
- Interface: Expected to be more of a “chat‑bot” style interaction.
Additional plans for 2026
Device | Screen size | Features
J490 (9″) | Portable manipulator | More space for content.
Security sensor – Integration into home system.
HomePod without display – Depends on new Siri.
Apple TV – Requires update; hardware upgrade since 2022, but firmware received Liquid Glass last year.
Conclusion
Apple is actively advancing in the smart‑home arena, but delays in Siri development could affect release timelines for key devices, including J490 and future Apple TV models. While competitors (Amazon, Google) have already captured a significant market share, Apple still has a strong user base of over 2.5 billion people, which may help accelerate further releases.
