BMW introduced the i3 – the first fully electric sedan in the 3 Series.
BMW i3 2027 – the first fully electric sedan of a new era
The German automaker announced the launch of the i3 2027 model, which it calls a “fully electric sedan.” The car is built on the fresh Neue Klasse platform and will be produced in Munich from August.
What has changed
Parameter New approach Comparison Platform
Fully redesigned traction control, stability, and ABS systems Different from previous generations Battery 800‑volt block with cylindrical cells (20 % higher capacity) Prismatic cells in the i4 and other 5th‑generation models
Charging Fast DC charging up to 400 kW Current standards for BMW‑EVs Range up to 708 km (30 % more than generation 5) Compared with current models
Engine and efficiency
* i3 50 xDrive – asynchronous motor on the front axle + synchronous motor on the rear.
* Power: 463 hp (345 kW).
* Torque: 645 Nm.
* Energy losses reduced by 40 % compared to the 5th‑generation powertrain.
* The car is 10 % lighter and 20 % cheaper to produce.
Environmental friendliness
* About 30 % of materials are recycled.
* Expanded use of monolithic components, simplifying post‑use disassembly.
* Using renewable energy, the entire life cycle of the model can achieve zero CO₂ emissions in just one year compared with the gasoline version.
Dynamics and comfort
* Weight distribution is almost 50:50; the center of gravity is lowered by the battery.
* Soft springs (unlike the iX3), less stiff upper bushings, altered transverse stability damper settings – all improve comfort and handling.
During turns torque shifts to the rear axle; during regenerative braking the rear axle engages first for stabilization. BMW claims that the regeneration system covers 95 % of all road maneuvers, providing the “smoothest braking” among company models.
Safety and autonomy
* Driver assistance systems are managed by a specialized liquid‑cooled processor.
* The system uses eye tracking and steering input to determine when driver intervention is needed.
Levels of support
Level Description Requirement
Basic Complies with R79 (UN) – the driver must keep hands on the wheel; activates at speeds > 130 km/h. Manual control, but with automatic assistance.
Advanced The first OEM system meeting R171. Allows stricter speed limit adherence, stopping at red lights and proceeding at green. Planned support for roundabouts and turns.
* Remote parking via the BMW smartphone app is also available.
In summary: the i3 2027 combines a lighter, more economical, and environmentally friendly design with advanced driver assistance systems while maintaining the dynamism and comfort that have always made the iconic 3 Series popular.
