ByteDance is postponing the global rollout of the video generator Seedance 2.0 due to copyright violations
Chinese company ByteDance has postponed the launch of its video generator Seedance 2.0 due to copyright concerns
What happened
ByteDance – the owner of the popular app TikTok – planned to bring its new AI video generator, Seedance 2.0, to the global market.
However, in light of potential intellectual property violations, the company decided to delay the worldwide launch.
Why problems arose
Seedance 2.0 is built on training a neural network with vast amounts of content, including films and TV shows.
Disney and other Hollywood studios accused ByteDance of using characters from their franchises without licenses to train the model.
In particular, a viral video circulating on Chinese social media featuring AI doubles of Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt battling each other became the basis for the claims.
According to Disney, ByteDance used likenesses of characters from global franchises such as Star Wars and Marvel, treating them as public domain material.
What the company was doing before the conflict
In February 2024, ByteDance introduced Seedance 2.0 in China, stating its purpose for professional film production and advertising.
The ability to process text, images, video, and audio simultaneously was supposed to significantly reduce content creation costs.
Current situation
The planned release of the product outside China (mid‑March) has been postponed due to legal risks.
A team of technical specialists is working on implementing safeguards against the use of copyrighted characters.
The legal department continues to develop frameworks for the safe application of the AI model.
Thus, ByteDance is forced to rethink its Seedance 2.0 launch strategy to avoid lawsuits and ensure compliance with international copyright standards.
