OpenAI launches advertising testing in ChatGPT

*The company officially announced the start of an experiment with displaying ads on the ChatGPT platform available to U.S. users.*

What the ad will look like
- Ad blocks will appear as marked links beneath the chatbot’s responses.
- OpenAI assures that “ads do not influence the answers given by ChatGPT.”

Who and where it will be seen
| Account type | Ad visibility |
|--------------|---------------|
| Free users (full access) | Yes |
| Go subscription ($8/month) | Yes |
| Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Education | No – exclusion requires a subscription ≥ $20/month |

Option to opt out of ads
Free users can disable them by agreeing to fewer free messages per day; Go subscribers do not have this option.

Ad management
Users can:
- Close ads;
- Leave feedback on them;
- Turn off personalization;
- Block ads based on previous chats;
- Delete their advertising profile data.

Advertisers receive only aggregated view and click statistics; personal user data and conversation content are not shared.

Restrictions and safety
- Ads are not shown to minors.
- When discussing sensitive topics (health, politics), ads are hidden for all users.
- While the experiment is in testing phase, not all users will see ads immediately.

Competitor reaction
Anthropic, one of OpenAI’s leading rivals, previously mocked ChatGPT’s advertising plan and stated that its chatbot Claude will never advertise anything.
