Chinese manufacturer BYD released a new Blade Battery 2.0 lithium iron phosphate battery that charges to 97 % in just nine minutes
BYD continues to maintain its leadership in the global electric vehicle market by introducing a new generation of Blade traction batteries
1. Why BYD cannot relax
The largest producer of batteries for electric cars according to CnEVPost is BYD. To preserve its worldwide leadership in the EV segment, it must constantly improve battery technology, as charging speed, range, and safety depend on it.
2. New Blade: fast charging and higher capacity
Charging speed – the second‑generation battery can recover up to 97 % charge in a record 9 minutes.
- From 10 % to 70 % charge is achieved in just 5 minutes.
- The remaining 3 % are left partially discharged so that the vehicle can use them during regenerative braking and avoid discharging to zero.
3. Use in cold conditions
Experiments show that even at –30 °C the battery restores charge from 20 % to 97 % in 12 minutes—only 3 minutes longer than at room temperature. This is especially important for regions of China and other countries with harsh winters.
4. Ultra‑fast charging and larger capacity
Compatibility with existing fast‑charging stations allows charging up to 30–50 % faster than previous models.
- Energy density has increased by more than 5 %, providing further range without recharging.
5. Tests and safety
After 500 charge‑discharge cycles the battery survived nail punctures during charging without smoke or flame.
- The impact loads it withstands are ten times higher than Chinese standards require.
- A simultaneous short circuit of four cells did not trigger a dangerous chemical reaction.
6. New BYD models
Yangwang U7 – a 150‑kWh battery will allow driving up to 1,006 km on electric traction.
- Denza Z9GT – a range of 1,036 km under the CLTC cycle before the first recharge.
BYD offers a lifetime warranty on the new series’ battery cells and claims that nominal capacity is preserved throughout the entire service life.
Thus, the new generation Blade batteries not only accelerate charging but also make electric vehicles more reliable and long‑range, strengthening BYD’s position as a global leader in electric transport.
