What is a false vacuum?
Modern physics is built on the idea of quantum fields.

All elementary particles are manifestations of these fields, and the vacuum itself has minimal energy.

If this energy is not the true minimum but only a “false” (metastable) state, then when it transitions to a lower-energy state the fundamental laws of the Universe change and everything that exists may disappear.

Experiment
* Where: Tsinghua University, China.
* How: Created a “vacuum” from Rydberg atoms—a simplified model sufficient to test the theory.
* Electrons in several atoms were given extra energy by a laser and found themselves in a metastable state.
* Then the return of the system to its true energy level was observed.

The results fully matched the predictions of the false vacuum model, confirming its internal consistency.

What does this mean for us?
If our Universe is indeed in a metastable state:

1. A quantum jump could occur at any point and at any time.
2. When transitioning to lower energy, the process propagates at the speed of light, but we will not notice its onset—everything will vanish suddenly.
3. After the “death,” a new Universe with different physical laws would arise.

But…

Our Universe has already existed for more than 13 billion years without transitioning to another state. There are no signs that it will happen in the near future.

We can only hope that the next 13 billion years will pass as calmly as the first ones.
