Unreal Tournament 2004 Returns to Life After Nearly 22 Years

The popular arena shooter *Unreal Tournament 2004*, created by Epic Games and Digital Extremes, has once again found an audience thanks to dedicated fans.

What Happened
Time Event December 2022 Epic Games removed the game from Steam and shut down the servers for *Unreal Tournament 2004* (and all other games in the series). 2025 The fan site OldUnreal entered into an agreement with Epic Games to support the game's code base. End 2024 OldUnreal, having permission from the developers, uploaded digital copies of the original disks for *Unreal* (1998) and *Unreal Tournament* (1999) to the Internet Archive’s digital library. Today Fans have received an official free version of *UT2004* via a download link hosted on OldUnreal.

How It Works
- Users on the ResetEra forum noted that the OldUnreal team, with Epic Games’ permission, prepared a link for downloading the official installer.

- Posting the full game is currently prohibited (at least for now), but the installer itself is available.

- Since 2025 OldUnreal has been regularly releasing unofficial patches for *UT2004* and the entire series.

These updates:
- improve client stability and security;
- enhance server and editor performance;
- add new features such as 64‑bit system support, additional renderers, and more.

Why It Matters
After Epic Games abandoned the series in favor of Fortnite, *Unreal Tournament* seemed doomed. Thanks to the collaboration between the fan team and official developers, the game is now freely available again, its legacy remains protected, and it continues to improve.
