Developers of Eve Online are forced to rename the studio in order to sever ties with China and the Communist Party.
New Look for Eve Online Studio: From CCP Games to Fenris Creations
After recently shedding its independent status at Pearl Abyss, the Icelandic developer known as CCP Games (Eve Online) decided to change its name almost 30 years after its founding. The company will now be called Fenris Creations.
Why “Fenris” specifically?
The CEO of Fenris Creations, Hilmar Veigar Petursson, explained in an interview with *GamesIndustry.biz* that the new name is closely tied to the company's history and Icelandic culture.
*Fenris* is the name of a giant wolf from Scandinavian mythology, symbolizing the balance between creation and destruction. This theme vividly reflects the gameplay of Eve Online: “When ships explode, there’s something beautiful in their destruction.” Petursson emphasized that the name carries a deep, “hardcore” meaning they have long been searching for.
Rebranding as a Practical Solution
The issue with the abbreviation CCP became one of the key factors. In the English-speaking world it can be associated not only with the studio but also with the Communist Party of China (CPC), which has over 100 million members and is the ruling force in the country.
Petursson noted:
> “It’s nothing serious, but I feel where everything is headed. We already have all these changes happening. The timing is right. If not now, then when?”
He made it clear that the company does not intend to confront the CPC over the use of the abbreviation CCP: “I won’t fight the Communist Party of China for the right to be called CCP.”
Conclusion
Thus, renaming to Fenris Creations is both a cultural echo and a strategic decision that helps avoid confusion and strengthen the brand’s uniqueness in the global gaming community.
