Digital copies of exclusives for the Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will soon drop below retail price.
Nintendo changes prices for Switch 2 exclusives
The U.S. division of the company announced that a new pricing policy will soon be applied to digital and physical versions of exclusive games for the hybrid Nintendo Switch 2 console.
What exactly will change
* Starting with the platformer “Yoshi and the Mysterious Book” (release date – May 21), prices for the game will vary by format.
* The digital release will cost $60 (see the pre‑order page in the U.S. eShop).
* The physical edition will be $10 more expensive, i.e., $70.
Why Nintendo is doing this
> “The difference in production and distribution costs between digital and retail versions forces us to adjust prices,” said the company.
> This change also, according to them, gives players greater freedom when buying and playing.
In an IGN interview, a Nintendo representative clarified: “We are not raising the price of physical editions; we simply offer digital versions cheaper than in retail.”
Situation outside the U.S.
* Video Games Chronicle notes that for some time now, retail copies of Nintendo games have been more expensive than digital ones in other countries.
* At the launch of Switch 2, the flagship game Mario Kart World sold for €90 (digital) and €80 (physical).
