Disney+ lost support for Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and 3-D due to a patent dispute
Disney+ is ending support for Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and 3D in Europe
The streaming giant Disney+ has officially dropped video streaming in the Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and 3D formats on European markets. The reason – a legal dispute with American company InterDigital, which owns patents for these technologies.
How it started
- By the end of 2025 German media first noticed the disappearance of Dolby Vision and HDR10+ from Disney+.
- Subscribers to *Disney+ Premium* were limited to viewing only in HDR10 format, even though they continued paying full price.
- In January 2026 Heise linked these changes to a lawsuit in Germany where Disney was accused of infringing InterDigital’s patents. The court ruled in a way that affected the service.
Spread of the problem
Country | Event | Germany | Dolby Vision and HDR10+ removed (from 2025) | France, Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal, Poland | Subscriber reports on Reddit (Feb 2026) | Netherlands | Tweakers reports issues in NLD | Northern Europe | Users report lack of Dolby Vision
Disney+ reaction
- FlatpanelsHD requested a comment from Disney.
- The company replied that the issue is “technical” and is working to restore access to Dolby Vision:
> *“Support for Dolby Vision in several European countries is unavailable due to technical issues. We are actively working on restoring it and will provide an update as soon as possible. 4K UHD and HDR support remains available on supported devices.”*
- Additionally, Disney+ removed all mentions of Dolby Vision from its support pages in Europe and even the US; 3D films disappeared from the platform because they are displayed via Dolby Vision on Apple Vision Pro.
Who is behind the conflict
InterDigital holds thousands of patents for radio and video technologies. The company has already sued Amazon, Microsoft, Samsung, and others, and is often called a “patent troll.”
Bottom line: Disney+ temporarily limits access to advanced HDR formats in Europe due to a legal dispute with InterDigital, while officially citing a technical reason. Users await the restoration of Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support.
