DJI enters the electric bicycle market with new Avinox M2 and M2S motors

The company that has long been known for its drones announced the launch of new kits for electric mountain bikes. During the summer of 2024, DJI introduced two motors – the Avinox M2 and the more powerful M2S – and immediately outpaced traditional market leaders such as Bosch and MAHLE.

What’s new?
* Technological core

The motors are based on DJI's aviation platform. Engineers transferred drone experience to bicycle systems: motors, transmissions, batteries, and control electronics are now integrated into a single “platform” with proprietary software.

* Customer base

At launch, more than 60 bike brands already use DJI kits.

Technical specifications
Model Peak power Torque Weight Avinox M2S 1500 W 150 Nm 2.59 kg Avinox M2 1100 W 125 Nm 2.65 kg

*Comparison with the first generation:*

The first motor delivered 1000 W and 120 Nm (peak), with a nominal power of 800 W/105 Nm. The new models increase power density by 45 % and torque by 21.6 %, while keeping almost identical dimensions.

*Noise:*

Maximum noise level does not exceed 45 dBA thanks to an innovative transmission system and special clutch gears.

Cooling and energy efficiency
The motors feature flat wire windings, and radiator fins minimize energy loss. This allows the motor to handle peak loads on steep climbs without overheating.

Batteries and charging
* FP700 – built‑in 700 Wh battery.

Charging from 0 % to 80 % takes 76 minutes thanks to a GaN (gallium nitride) power block.

* RS800 / RS600 – removable batteries that can be charged separately from the bike.

The RS600 unit can be mounted on the frame, extending travel distance.

Control and integration
The platform is operated via a colored OLED screen (2 inches) with Apple Find My support. A key feature is the Avinox Ride app:

* Automatically adjusts motor power to a specified heart‑rate range.

* Imports routes in GPX, FIT, and TCX formats.

* When heart rate exceeds a set threshold, the motor adds assistance to reduce load.

Market positioning
The new motors significantly outpace competitors:

Competitor Power (W) Torque (Nm) Bosch CX Gen 5 60 85 Specialized Levo R850 111 MAHLE M401 200 120

DJI plans to continue expanding its bicycle platform lineup, offering even more advanced solutions in the near future.
