Elon Musk’s X Chat debuts on iOS – a new competitor to WhatsApp and Telegram launches trials
New app from “X” – X Chat is already being tested
Elon Musk’s company is launching its own messenger, which is still in beta. iPhone owners gained access through TestFlight; the first quota of one thousand users was fully used within two hours. In response to rapid interest, the team increased the limit to five thousand participants.
Who and why are testing it?
Product designer from xAI, Michael Boswell, announced that X Chat had been worked on for several months in a “quiet” mode. Now they need feedback from real users: “Use it, test it, and let us know your impressions,” he wrote on Tuesday on the X platform.
Messenger functionality
X Chat offers full encrypted messaging. It allows you to:
- Create protected chats
- Send media files
- Set a password for conversations
- Edit and automatically delete messages by timer
The app replicates the capabilities of the private message tab in the social network X, which was significantly updated in November.
Security is the main focus
Musk has repeatedly emphasized that the service uses a peer‑to‑peer encryption system similar to the one underlying Bitcoin. In Joe Rogan’s podcast he called X Chat “the least secure of all messaging systems,” while simultaneously criticizing competitors: WhatsApp and even Signal received sharp feedback from their leaders (Will Cathcart from WhatsApp). Musk stresses that his criticism is aimed at improving security overall.
Future plans
According to the neural network Grok, work on an Android version of X Chat is already underway and slated for an upcoming release.
