Google Revises Advertising Strategy in Gemini

In January, DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis stated that ads would not yet be placed in Gemini. More recently, Google’s Senior Vice President for Knowledge and Information Nick Fox announced that the advertising experience from AI Mode is “likely” to carry over to Gemini in the near future.

How Ads Work Now
Google is not rushing to embed ads directly into Gemini. Instead, they are added to AI Mode—a search tool built on Gemini. Ad listings are separated from organic results and clearly marked so users immediately see the difference. According to the company, ads appear only where it truly makes sense.

Why This Step Matters
The entire Google business is built around advertising, so how that ad content is integrated into AI products determines the industry’s future. Companies that first learn to seamlessly weave ad content into conversational environments will gain a significant competitive edge.

Google is in a more favorable position than its rivals: by 2025 revenues are expected to exceed $400 billion, giving the company room to wait. Meanwhile, OpenAI must quickly boost profits—this year it needs to nearly double and add $30 billion. That’s why ChatGPT developers are already testing ad demos with free users.

What Fox’s Statement Means
Fox emphasizes that having ads in Gemini is not a matter of values but one of priorities and timing. He views personalization as a key element of search and hints that it could become part of the overall search experience in the future. If this happens, advertisers will gain a new level of contextual targeting.

Data Security
Despite potential ad integration, Fox assures that user data will not be sold or shared with advertisers. This underscores Google’s commitment to protecting user privacy even as new AI platforms are monetized.
