Google Maps is launching a major update: the new AI feature “Ask the Map,” enhanced immersive navigation, and additional innovations.
Google Expands “Maps” with New Gemini‑Powered Features
*New features and updates are already available in the United States and India for Android and iOS.*
1. “Ask the Map” Feature
- What is it?
Users can ask questions in plain language, as if speaking to a person. Example:
*“My phone’s battery is draining; where can I charge it without a long line?”*
or *“Is there an illuminated tennis court tonight that I can play on?”*
- Trip Planning
Requests such as *“I’m heading to the Grand Canyon. What stops should I make along the way?”* will be answered with detailed recommendations: arrival times, real‑user tips (e.g., “there’s a hidden trail here”), and even free admission tickets.
- Personalization
Answers take into account your preferences, history of visited places, and saved items in your account.
- Availability
Already works on Android and iOS (U.S., India). Desktop support coming soon.
2. “Immersive Navigation”
What’s new? It looks like a 3‑D view: buildings, overpasses, and terrain are shown at real scale (similar to Apple Maps). Road details—lanes, crosswalks, traffic lights, stop signs—are all highlighted. Enhanced route overview—intelligent scaling and “transparent” buildings let you see complex turns and reconfigurations in advance. Voice cues—natural language explanations of alternative routes (fewer jams or a faster toll option), plus real‑time alerts about road work and accidents from Waze and the Maps community. Destination prep—a Street View preview, parking recommendations. As you approach, entrances, nearby lots, and the street where you need to stop become visible.
- Platforms
Launch today in the U.S.; expansion expected to iOS, Android, CarPlay, Android Auto, and cars with integrated Google apps.
3. How It Works
Google introduced Gemini into Maps at the end of last year. Now the AI assistant not only reads news and adds events to your calendar but also assists with navigation:
- In Street View it refines directions and provides information about nearby attractions instead of just measuring distances.
> Miriam Daniel, Vice President of Google Maps
> “Our goal is to rethink driving by eliminating guesswork. Immersive navigation completely changes the game: updated visual design, real‑world data, and more intuitive guidance.”
Bottom line: Google is making Maps smarter and easier with Gemini AI assistance and 3‑D navigation rich in information for drivers and pedestrians. New features are already available in the U.S. and India, and will expand to all platforms next.
