Google Meet Adds Voice Translation to Desktop App

The company announced that the real‑time spoken language translation feature in Google Meet has moved out of beta and is now available to almost all Workspace users on desktop computers. In the coming months it will also appear in mobile versions for Android and iOS.

Brief Development History

- May 2023 – the company first announced AI‑generated translation during a conversation.
- Until recently, this translation was only available to Google AI Pro/Ultra subscribers and Enterprise Alpha program participants.
- On January 27, Google expanded access to Workspace Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, and Frontline Plus users. It also became available to all accounts with AI Pro or AI Ultra plans under Workspace Business and Education subscriptions.

How It Works

- The feature is rolled out gradually: owners of the specified accounts can see it within 15 days after the announcement.
- Once enabled, translation can be activated during a meeting by clicking the icon in the upper right corner of the screen. Additional settings are also available.

Supported Languages and Limits

At launch, six languages are supported: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Portuguese. In one meeting you can select only one source‑to‑target language pair.

Related Features

Google Meet has offered real‑time speech-to-text subtitles since 2022, but the new feature provides full voice translation without pauses.
