GoPro launches new GP-3 chip: double performance and better battery life

GoPro has announced the upcoming release of its latest image processing processor – GP‑3, fabricated using a 5‑nanometer process. It will be used in future brand cameras and promises to more than double pixel processing speed, improve AI algorithm efficiency, and enhance low-light shooting quality compared with the current GP‑2 chip.

Market positioning
GP‑3 is positioned as a key element of the new era of professional image quality for small form-factor cameras: action cams, 360‑degree cameras, and other models. The vendor expects these improvements to open up new opportunities in space- and power-constrained segments.

Technical context
Since 2021 GoPro has used the GP‑2 chip, which already includes AI algorithms for automatic camera setting optimization (underwater shooting, snow shooting) and auto-focus control. The new GP‑3 chip adds a specialized NPU that allows real-time AI task processing even in low-light conditions.

Management statement
“We are confident that the new exclusive GP‑3 processor will lead in all key parameters: image quality, resolution, frame rate, performance in low light, as well as energy efficiency and heat output,” said GoPro senior vice president Pablo Lema. He added that the first cameras with GP‑3 are planned for release in Q2 2026.

Thus, GP‑3 will become the foundation for future GoPro models, offering users unparalleled performance and quality even in the toughest shooting conditions.
