HP launches its own local AI system HP IQ

Hewlett Packard announced the release of a new artificial intelligence platform – HP IQ, which will run directly on HP devices and does not require constant cloud connectivity.

What’s included in the system
1. Large language model

- Enables chat dialogue, text generation, and answering questions.

2. Secretary‑assistant

- Uses laptop microphones to record meetings, then automatically generates agenda items and summaries.

3. HP NearSense

- Shows a list of colleagues in the same room, allows quick file transfer by drag‑and‑drop, and connects to HP Poly conference equipment.

Technical requirements
- Early access program launch – starts spring 2026.

- Requires new EliteBook or ProBook 2026 models with the label “PC with artificial intelligence” and at least 24 GB RAM.

- Expansion to other HP laptops, desktop PCs, and Poly Studio panels is planned for summer; new IQ devices will appear in the second half of the year.

Demonstration of capabilities
1. Document analysis – a representative uploaded a confidential file and asked the bot (based on OpenAI’s GPT‑OSS‑20B) to analyze it and write a board meeting review. The bot completed both tasks quickly and thoroughly.

2. Meeting recording – shown how HP IQ records in‑person meetings via laptop microphones and converts recordings into action items and summaries.

Privacy
- Brown (head of HP IQ product department) advises obtaining consent from all meeting participants.

- HP IQ does not store audio recordings, so it cannot provide full transcripts, limiting options for some users.

NearSense features
- Detects colleagues in the same room using Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, and microphone.

- Allows one‑click file sending and connection to HP Poly conferences.

- Future plans include printing on nearby printers, pairing with headsets, and screen sharing to external displays.

Technological approach
HP uses Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, and microphone sensors for precise user location detection. The company claims the system can distinguish a person in the room from someone behind a glass partition through “room mapping.”

Development plan
- Over three years HP IQ will expand: the next focus is compatibility with Android devices, enabling millions of phones to use local file sharing and conference communication features.

- The GPT‑OSS‑20B model was trained in September 2025. For up‑to‑date information (weather, quotes) it accesses the internet; IT departments can disable this mode.

Conclusion
Matt Brown emphasizes that HP IQ complements existing tools and gives users the ability to securely process data locally right on their PCs. This makes AI‑enabled devices more valuable and functional for work processes.
