iFixit breaks down the MacBook Neo: repairability at a new level

iFixit specialists conducted a detailed teardown of Apple's new laptop – the MacBook Neo – and were pleasantly surprised by how easy it is to disassemble and repair. The test model chosen was the pricier $699 configuration with a Touch ID fingerprint scanner keyboard.

What specifically turned out to be simple to dismantle?
* Screws – proprietary Pentalobe, but opening the case required no special effort.

* Internal components – arranged rationally. There are no “hidden” parts; everything looks like a modular design.

The battery drew particular attention
Apple abandoned adhesive mounting for the battery, as in most modern MacBooks. Instead it is secured with 18 screws, making battery replacement easy and quick. iFixit says this move anticipates European Union requirements: from 2027 manufacturers must make batteries in portable devices replaceable.

Access to other key components
* USB‑C ports and headphone jack – separate modules that can be replaced without touching the motherboard.

* Display – removal is straightforward thanks to simple disassembly of the antenna block. This makes screen replacement significantly easier than on previous models.

* Keyboard – secured with 41 screws and can be removed separately from the top part of the case.

What reduces production cost?
Experts noted two key elements:

1. Simplified audio system, which likely uses cheaper components.

2. Mechanical trackpad – a return to this type after 2015, simplifying assembly and cutting costs.

Limitations
The only significant drawback is the inability to upgrade memory: both RAM and SSD are soldered onto the board with no possibility of replacement (without chip-soldering skills).

Final iFixit rating
* MacBook Neo – 6 out of 10.

Pros: the most replaceable battery among MacBooks since 2012 and easy display swap. Cons: soldered storage and RAM.

For comparison:

* MacBook Pro 14″ (M5) – 4 out of 10.

* MacBook Air (M4) – 5 out of 10.

Earlier, the Tech Re‑Nu channel already noted that most key components of the MacBook Neo have a modular design, and their replacement promises to be straightforward. This confirms iFixit’s conclusion that Apple is making the new laptop more repairable and accessible to users.
