Lucid unveiled a driverless taxi concept to rival Tesla CyberCab, among other innovations
Lucid Motors: new plans and steps toward the mass market
What’s happening at the company
- The emergence of “affordable” models
Lucid acknowledges that the premium segment does not allow for business scaling. Therefore, the company plans to launch more affordable electric vehicles on a new mid‑size platform.
- A new platform – the foundation for the future
This week Lucid revealed the first details of its “mid” platform, which will serve as the basis for a potential autonomous electric taxi called Lunar. Specific sales dates have not yet been set: the company must first launch deliveries of regular cars on this platform.
- Lunar is a concept, not a finished product
Lucid representatives confirmed to TechCrunch that development of a specialized autonomous taxi is not underway. Lunar remains only a general label for a possible future direction of the company.
Partnerships and pilot projects
- Uber + Nuro
As part of its collaboration with Uber and Nuro, Lucid plans to adapt the Gravity crossover for autopilot and begin passenger transport around San Francisco by the end of this year.
- It is expected that by the end of the year about 20,000 robotaxis based on already produced Gravity models will appear on U.S. roads.
- Platform licensing
Lucid intends to make revenue from licensing its electric vehicle platforms a significant part of its income. In this sense, partnerships with taxi services are strategically important.
Software monetization
- Paid autopilot tiers
The company plans to introduce subscriptions for driver‑assist systems, similar to Tesla’s approach:
- *DreamDrive Pro* – basic autopilot level at $69/month.
- Advanced package – $199/month, which does not require driver intervention.
- Intelligent assistant
In the future Lucid will enhance its internal intelligent assistant that manages service functions inside the car interiors.
New models on the mid‑size platform
Model | Description | Starting price
Cosmos | First model on the new platform, slated for release by year’s end. | $50 000
Earth | A roomier crossover than Cosmos. | Unknown
Third model with increased off‑road capability. |
- Toponymy
Model names (Cosmos, Earth) emphasize the brand’s “astronomical” theme.
Efficiency and energy economics
- Lucid continues to focus on improving energy efficiency.
- The new platform uses 800 V and promises an average energy consumption of 13.8 kWh/100 km, which will allow:
- For the Cosmos model to reach up to 7.2 km/kWh.
- To charge the battery to 320 km in 14 minutes at suitable stations.
- Traction batteries remain the most expensive and bulky part of electric vehicles; Lucid aims to reduce their size and weight, thereby increasing energy efficiency and operational convenience.
Thus, Lucid Motors is preparing a strategy to transition from premium cars to more mass‑market models while simultaneously developing autonomous taxis and monetizing software. In the coming years, the company expects significant growth both in its own vehicle lineup and in partnership projects with Uber and Nuro.
