Micron Technology launches a new SSD series drive Micron 9650

*Micron announced the introduction into mass production of the world’s first solid-state drive supporting the PCIe 6.0 standard — the Micron 9650.*

What’s new?
Parameter Value
Port PCIe 6.0 (twice as fast compared to PCIe 5.0)
Read speed up to 28,000 MB/s
Write speed up to 14,000 MB/s
Random read IOPS up to 5.5 million/sec
Random write IOPS up to 900 thousand/sec

Micron compared these figures with similar SSD models on PCIe 5.0 and noted that in most cases the performance doubles.

Efficiency
* With the same power consumption (25 W) the new drive delivers almost twice the throughput: 1,120 MB/s versus 560 MB/s for the PCIe 5.0 model.
* In random read, performance per watt is 220 thousand/sec compared to 132 thousand/sec for the older generation.

Where it will be used
Micron positions the Micron 9650 as a solution for data centers. The company exited the consumer segment after shutting down the Crucial brand in December of last year and now focuses exclusively on corporate markets, where high-speed transfer of large volumes of data between storage and compute resources is critical.

Thus, the Micron 9650 represents a significant leap forward in SSD technology: double throughput, high power efficiency, and an orientation toward AI infrastructure and high-performance data centers.
