Microsoft Expands Support for Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD)

Microsoft announced an expansion of the list of devices that can use Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD). Previously, ASD was only available on portable consoles ROG Xbox Ally; its pre-release version is now supported on desktop PCs with discrete AMD GPUs and on gaming laptops with integrated AMD graphics.

What is ASD? ASD reduces real‑time shader compilation latency. As a result, games start smoothly right after launch: precompiled shaders are delivered from the cloud during loading, speeding up the process and reducing “stutters.” The technology first appeared on ROG Xbox Ally in October last year.

Demonstration on Forza Horizon 6 Microsoft demonstrated ASD’s effectiveness with Forza Horizon 6. The test used a PC with an AMD Radeon RX 7600 GPU and an AMD Ryzen 7 5800 CPU. With ASD enabled, load time dropped to 4 seconds; without it, the game loaded in about a minute and a half. The company stated that ASD can reduce game launch times by 95%. An interesting note: the caption on one of the screenshots in the report references the Radeon RX 9060 accelerator.

System Requirements For ASD to work:

ParameterMinimum Requirements
OSWindows 11 24H2 or newer
Xbox Gaming ServicesVersion 37.113.11003.0 and above
PC Gaming PreviewAccess via Xbox Insider Hub
GPUAMD GPUs based on RDNA 3, RDNA 3.5, or RDNA 4
DriversAMD Adrenalin 26.5.2 and newer

Thus, Microsoft is taking a step toward faster and smoother gaming graphics on both portable and stationary devices that support modern AMD GPUs.
