Microsoft launches a large-scale “revamp” of Windows search

Finally Microsoft confirmed that it is working on significant improvements to the internal Windows search engine. This decision came after numerous user complaints about slow search performance, irrelevant web suggestions, and poor local indexing.

What the update promises
* Faster speed – search should run faster than previous OS versions.
* Improved relevance – files and apps will rank higher, while Bing advertising will recede into the background.
* Clean interface – a simplified UI without distracting elements.
* Platform reliability – part of Microsoft’s overall strategy to increase Windows 11 stability.

Why it matters
The Windows search system has long been considered “troublesome” for most users. It would slowly find files on local drives, often display too much web content, and Bing ads would occupy spaces where important system elements (such as the Recycle Bin) should be.

How Microsoft is responding
* Tali Roth – head of OS shell development – actively replied to comments on social media. She confirmed that “big improvements” are being made to search and explained how they will be implemented.
* In response to a specific question about incorrect display of the Recycle Bin, Roth wrote:
*“We’re working on adjusting ranking in search so your apps (including ‘Recycle Bin’) appear where they belong relative to other apps.”*

Technical details
1. The current system – search uses the `SearchIndexer.exe` service, which scans selected directories and ranks results based on many signals: user habits, system data, web integrations.
2. Bing issue – excessive focus on external suggestions sometimes pushes local files into the background.
3. New goals
* Quick display of installed apps and key system elements.
* Increase weight of local files in ranking.
* Minimize influence of web recommendations.

What’s next
Microsoft continues work on the WinUI 3 UI framework to reduce dependence on multi-layered and web-connected components. This should cut latency and make interactions more responsive.

And although Windows search isn’t being rebuilt from scratch, the planned changes promise a noticeable improvement in speed, accuracy, and usability. Users can expect a cleaner interface where needed files and apps appear instantly instead of a mix of random web placements.
