Mozilla is developing a new design for Firefox – “Nova”

Mozilla continues work on a radically redesigned interface for its browser. The project has the codename Nova and promises drastic changes in appearance: smooth curves, noticeably rounded tabs and address bar, pastel color tones, a completely rethought New Tab page, floating controls and much more. Information about these changes was provided by Neowin.

Who’s sharing drafts
Web developer and author of several open extensions – Sören Hentzschel – first showed early mockups of the browser. However, since the work has only just begun, the final look of Firefox may differ from the current sketches.

Inspiration and features
* Material You: Nova shows influence from Google’s Material You design. The browser’s color scheme apparently changes based on the selected wallpaper.

* Vertical tabs: instead of the usual horizontal layout, the new version plans a vertical tab bar.

* Additional interface elements (download panel, site protection, extensions management window, and site permissions field) are already designed in Nova style.

History of Firefox redesigns
Firefox has changed its look several times:

YearVersionKey changes
2012MetroTouch interface for Windows 8, activated only when Firefox was set as the default browser. Project closed in 2014 due to low popularity.
2017Photon (Firefox 57)Tabs became rectangular; address bar merged with search.
2021Proton (Firefox 89)Visual “clutter” of menus removed, readability improved.

Where to follow Nova
* Bugzilla – Mozilla’s open bug tracker where you can track the project’s progress.

* Figma – there is a design project, but access is currently limited only to official browser developers.

Thus, the new Firefox design “Nova” promises not only aesthetic updates but also a more convenient and adaptive user experience. Follow news on Bugzilla and in Figma to see how the project evolves.
