New chapter in OpenAI funding: Nvidia prepares an additional $30 billion

OpenAI has long been looking for investors who could not only inject capital but also provide technical support. Potential partners include Nvidia, whose AI‑boom revenues are growing and whose free cash flow allows it to make large investments.

What is already known
1. Existing deal

In September it was announced that plans were in place to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI, but the terms of this deal were conditional: the money would come in stages and be tied to infrastructure construction (for example, the first tranche—$10 billion after launching 1 GW of computing capacity).

2. New Nvidia initiative

Currently Nvidia is negotiating an additional investment of $30 billion. According to sources, this amount is unrelated to the previous one and does not depend on any interim milestones for OpenAI.

3. Flexibility of terms

Under certain circumstances Nvidia could add these $30 billion to the amounts already discussed in September, but no concrete plan exists yet.

4. Positions of the parties

Sam Altman (CEO of OpenAI) denied rumors of difficulties in negotiations with Nvidia. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang confidently stated that the company is ready to participate in the next funding round and even considers an IPO.

How the new capital will be allocated
- First phase

About $100 billion will be invested by major strategic players: Amazon, Microsoft, Nvidia. These funds will go toward developing AI technologies, infrastructure, and research programs.

- Second phase

A smaller portion of the capital will be raised from a broader group of institutional investors.

What is expected next
The Financial Times reports that the $30 billion deal could be signed as early as this weekend. If it goes through, Nvidia would fully abandon its long‑term financing of a total of $100 billion and become a direct participant in the current round.

The proceeds will mainly go toward purchasing accelerators and other equipment from Nvidia, allowing OpenAI to significantly increase its computing power.
