Nvidia is preparing for a “transition” from GPU to CPU

*Annual Reporting and Planning*

At the annual GTC conference, held in March, Nvidia’s leadership traditionally unveils the company’s plans for the coming year. This week founder Jensen Huang confirmed that in 2026 the company will introduce new central processors (CPUs) capable of competing with Intel and AMD products.

*Changing Role of CPUs in AI Computing*

Huang reminded of the classic “90 % GPU / 10 % CPU” ratio that dominated the computing industry. According to him, the situation is changing: the role of processors in artificial intelligence tasks is growing, and Nvidia plans to use them not only as a “supplement” to graphics cards but also as the core platform for servers.

*Potential Growth in Demand*

Last month Huang predicted an “explosive” growth in demand for CPUs for data centers (DCs). He even suggested that Nvidia could become one of the world’s largest processor manufacturers. At GTC 2026 he intends to reveal details of his strategy.

*New Contracts and Partnerships*

Recently Nvidia signed a deal with Meta Platforms to supply Grace and Vera CPU series, without GPU commitments. A similar contract was signed by Meta with AMD, confirming growing demand for processors among major cloud providers.

*Expert Forecasts*

Experts believe that as AI models evolve, the role of CPUs in data centers will only increase. In the near future the number of server processors could rival GPUs, and then one type of component may become dominant. Huang notes that Nvidia’s architecture is designed to handle large volumes of data, making them especially attractive for AI infrastructure.

*What to Expect from GTC 2026*

The company’s head promised to disclose details about new CPUs and their application in AI infrastructure in March. We’ll keep an eye on developments.
