OpenAI disbanded the group that explained its mission to the public
OpenAI liquidates its mission communication department
OpenAI announced the closure of a unit that was responsible for conveying the corporate mission to employees and external audiences. According to TechCrunch, all team members were reorganized into other parts of the company, and its leader received a new title of chief futurist.
When and why the department was created
It is believed that the department was established in September 2024 and focused on promoting OpenAI’s statement about how strong artificial intelligence (AGI) should serve humanity’s interests. According to Platformer, its task was to help employees and the public understand the company’s goals.
> “The mission alignment project was a support function helping employees and the public understand our mission and AI impact. This work continues throughout the organization,” an OpenAI spokesperson said.
New role of the former leader
Josh Achiam, who previously headed the mission alignment department, posted on his blog about moving to the chief futurist position. He explained:
> “My goal is to support OpenAI’s mission and ensure that strong artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity by studying how the world will change in response to AI, AGI, and much more.”
> In his new role, Achiam will work with Jason Pruet, a physicist and technology expert at the company.
What happens to the remaining staff
The remaining six or seven people from the department were transferred to other OpenAI units where they continue to perform similar tasks. A company representative emphasized that disbanding the team is a normal reorganization typical of rapidly growing organizations.
Thus, while the mission communication department no longer exists as an independent unit, its functions and values are preserved within OpenAI under a new structure and leadership.
