OpenAI is stepping beyond “ring‑deal” transactions and investing in real projects

The AI startup does not limit itself to “ring” agreements where it merely acts as an intermediary. The company is now actively involved in creating tangible products.

1. OpenAI chip production at TSMC – When: from the third quarter of this year.

- What: a chip to accelerate AI, developed jointly with Broadcom.

TSMC is preparing to launch production of this device and plans its delivery by the end of 2024.

2. HBM4 memory supply from Samsung Electronics – Agreement: According to Korean Economic Daily, the contract between Samsung and OpenAI has already been signed.

- Terms: supply of High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) chips in a 12‑layer configuration starting at the end of the second half of the year.
- Volume of the first batch: about 800 million gigabits (an unusual but precise measurement).

Samsung will provide the memory accelerators needed for the new chip.

3. Collaboration with Broadcom
OpenAI entered into a partnership with Broadcom last year to jointly develop a specialized AI chip. This collaboration provides the technical foundation and technological solutions required for production.

4. Long‑term contracts from Samsung with major clients
TrendForce reports new agreements between Samsung, AMD, Google, and Microsoft.

- Duration: 3 to 5 years.
- Terms: fixed base price, but if spot market prices exceed it, an additional payment may be made by the customer.
- Advances: large prepayments with a partial refund option if the planned memory purchase is cancelled.
- For example, Microsoft has already paid an advance of more than $10 million.

5. Why such contracts are becoming standard
Experts note that long‑term agreements are needed not only because of the shortage of HBM4 on the market but also because each memory must be tailored to specific client requirements. Prepayment allows Samsung to scale production more freely and guarantees that the manufactured memory will be sold.

In short:

OpenAI is actively involved in creating its own AI chips, TSMC is preparing for their launch, and Samsung supplies the necessary high‑speed memory modules. At the same time, the company secures long‑term deals with key technology giants, strengthening its position in the specialized memory market.
