Outlook Classic 2604 Build 19929.20164 Update Causes Issues with Displaying Embedded Images

Microsoft has confirmed a bug in the latest update of the Outlook Classic mail client (version 2604, build 19929.20164). The problem manifests itself by occasionally failing to load images embedded within emails.

What Happens
- When opening an email, instead of inline pictures a block may appear with the message:

*“The linked image cannot be displayed. The file may have been moved, renamed, or deleted. Make sure the link points to the correct file and location.”*

- In some cases nothing is shown at all.

How It Affects Users
Users who frequently use images in their email signatures are especially annoyed:

- When forwarding or replying to an email, images can disappear permanently because they are not included in the message copy.

What Microsoft Offers
1. A test check – the company has provided a way to verify whether a specific error is caused by the program.

2. Until a fix is released, Outlook recommends avoiding inserting images with text wrapping above and below (wrapped images).

Who Is Affected
- The bug only affects the Outlook Classic variant; other client versions are currently unaffected.

- Microsoft stated that the issue is temporary: after installing a future patch, images in original emails will display correctly.
