Rockstar Games – hack via third‑party service

The Rockstar Games studio officially confirmed the compromise of corporate data after an attack carried out by the hacker group ShinyHunters. The hackers demanded a ransom and set an ultimatum until April 14, threatening to publish stolen information. Rockstar stated that the attackers gained access only to a “limited amount of insignificant” data that will not affect players or the company’s operations.

How the hack happened

According to IGN (citing The CyberSec Guru), the hackers used a third‑party analytics AI platform called Anodot. With its help, they masqueraded as an internal service and infiltrated Rockstar’s Snowflake cloud storage. The cybercriminals did not breach Snowflake directly; instead, they obtained authentication tokens via Anodot, which they then used as a digital key to access the data.

Threat from ShinyHunters

In their statement, the group warned Rockstar of potential consequences if its demands were not met. However, the company emphasized that the stolen data is limited and cannot damage its reputation or business.

Attitude toward the future GTA 6

Rockstar noted that the attack did not reveal key plot or gameplay details of the project set to release in six months. This alleviates concerns about a large leak of GTA 6 materials.

Past security issues

This is not the first incident in the studio’s history:

- In 2022, dozens of early‑version game videos were leaked online;
- In December 2023, an early release of the first trailer occurred.

Take‑Two CEO Strauss Zelnick described these events as disappointing for the team but noted that they would not cause critical harm to the business.
