Samsung has started production of real QNED displays—technology similar to OLED but without organic components
Samsung Display returns to work on True QNED
According to South Korean sources, Samsung Display’s division has resumed development of next-generation displays – True QNED (Quantum‑Dot Nanorod Emitting Diode) – by the end of 2025. The project was suspended in mid-2022 due to serious technological difficulties, but after a reassessment of prospects it became relevant again.
What is True QNED and why “bring it to life”?
* True – a word emphasizing the real LED foundation of Samsung displays.
* Unlike LG, where the term QNED (Quantum Nano‑Emitting Diode) refers only to marketing, Samsung speaks of actual LEDs based on nanorods – a structure in which the rod length exceeds its diameter.
* For LG, “QNED” essentially remains an LCD screen.
Thus Samsung wants to separate its technology from a competitor’s marketing trick and demonstrate a real transition to LED displays.
Strategic context
* The development team in the specialized division has been reassembled.
* Company leadership recognized nanorod LEDs as a long‑term strategic goal, confirming Samsung’s desire to diversify production and gradually replace dominant LCD panels on the market.
Technical features
1. Nanorod LEDs
* These are inorganic LEDs that emit blue backlight.
* The color is then converted with quantum dots into red and green shades.
2. Past problems
* Previously the company faced difficulties:
- uniform LED fabrication across the panel area;
- homogeneity of pixel brightness.
3. New solutions
* Samsung now intends to overcome these barriers by using more stable manufacturing processes.
Additional directions
* Development of EL‑QD (NanoLED) – where quantum dots themselves act as emitters.
* Promotion of microLED technology.
* Expansion of already mastered QD‑OLED production.
It is important to note that True QNED displays will retain OLED advantages: inkjet printing of quantum dots will reduce product cost.
In short, Samsung Display plans to revive the True QNED project in 2025, positioning it as a real transition to next‑generation LED displays while continuing work on related technologies.
