Sony Stops Taking Orders for CF‑express and SD Memory Cards

After the company announced a price increase for PlayStation 5 consoles, Sony issued an additional notice about its products. The official website states that starting March 27, 2026, it will cease taking orders for almost all memory cards in the CF‑express and SD lineup, including Type A, Type B models, as well as SDXC/SDHC.

Why Did This Happen?
Sony explains the decision by citing an ongoing global flash memory shortage. The company also points to “other factors,” among them:

- helium shortages (due to military conflicts in Iran),
- difficulties in semiconductor manufacturing.

As a result, CF‑express and SD memory card supplies cannot meet current demand. Therefore Sony has temporarily suspended sales of these products both through authorized dealers and directly to consumers at Sony stores.

How the Resumption Will Be Handled
The company said that the decision to resume order acceptance will be made after monitoring supply conditions. Information about this will appear on the product page.

> “Due to a global semiconductor (memory) shortage and other factors, it is expected that in the foreseeable future CF‑express and SD memory card supplies will not meet demand. Therefore we have decided to temporarily suspend taking orders from our authorized dealers and customers at Sony stores starting March 27, 2026… We will review the possibility of resuming order acceptance by monitoring supply conditions and will announce this separately on the product information page,” says an official statement from Sony Japan.

What This Means for the Market
In recent months, memory card prices have almost tripled. This is driven by huge demand from data centers using AI, which consume large volumes of DRAM and NAND memory. Manufacturers such as Sony are forced to take measures to preserve inventory.

Although the current sales suspension only affects Japan, it already serves as a warning signal about potential global memory supply issues, noted Digital Camera World.
