SpaceX has postponed its Mars program in favor of a lunar project

The major NASA contractor, as well as one of the world’s largest rocket manufacturers – Space X – is forced to reassess its priorities. Supporting the interests of the U.S. aerospace program, it decided to delay launching an unmanned mission to Mars to a later date and focus on sending a spacecraft to the Moon.

Why the Moon is more important than Mars
Elon Musk, founder of both companies, emphasizes that establishing a continuously operating base on the Moon will accelerate the development of space data centers (SDS). In turn, this will provide resources for further exploration of Mars and even “spreading across the Universe.”

> *“The opportunities that open up before us thanks to implementing the plan to create an SDS in space will allow us to fund self‑developing stations on the Moon, conquer Mars by civilization, and ultimately spread across the Universe,”* Musk told SpaceX investors.

Participation in the Artemis program
Space X will be involved in NASA’s Artemis III lunar mission. The spacecraft orbiting the Moon will allow astronauts to transfer to a module, descend to the surface, and return to Earth.

- Artemis II (lunar flyby) – planned for this year.
- Artemis III (first landing module since 1972) – scheduled for 2028.

Cancellation of Mars flights
Initially SpaceX had planned five Starship launches to Mars at the end of 2026, when the distance from Earth would be minimal. In January of this year Musk declared that scenario unlikely and noted that “the Mars mission would become a distraction.”

To deliver people and cargo to the Moon with Starship in March 2027, the company will have to conduct many launches and learn how to refuel rockets mid‑flight. Last October NASA accelerated SpaceX’s preparation, asserting that the company could send people to the Moon more simply.

Competition with Blue Origin
Blue Origin (Jeff Bezos) is also developing a lander for the Moon. Last month it paused its commercial launch program to focus on the lunar mission. NASA welcomes competition between SpaceX and Blue Origin in creating new lunar vehicles.

Conclusion:

Space X has postponed its Mars program to a later date to fulfill the priority task of launching an unmanned spacecraft to the Moon. This decision is supported by Musk’s internal ambitions (creating a lunar base and space SDS) as well as NASA’s requirements within the Artemis program.
