The lead of the Assassin’s Creed project “Codename Hexe” has departed following the exit of the creative director.
Brief on the latest changes in the “Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe” project
What happened
1. Left the project
In February, creative director Clint Hocking departed from the “Codename Hexe” project, and Jean Guesdon stepped in as the new head of content for the entire series and creative director of “Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.”
2. Second change
According to Kotaku and French blogger j0nathan (who focuses on Ubisoft), two months after Guesdon’s appointment, the project was left without a lead developer—Benoit Richer moved to indie studio Servo Games.
3. Reason for leaving
As j0nathan explained, Richer’s departure is linked to how Guesdon “tamed” project management: “Since Jean Guesdon took over the franchise in February, he decided to eliminate all the magic from Hexe. For example, we were supposed to manage a cat—now that won’t happen.”
Official Ubisoft response
When announcing Hocking’s exit, an Ubisoft spokesperson emphasized that “Codename Hexe” still promises “something unique” by Assassin’s Creed standards, even though details about the project are scarce.
What is known about the project
* Genre – open‑world action RPG adventure.
* Setting – witch hunts in the Holy Roman Empire of the 16th century, positioned as “the darkest Assassin’s Creed ever.”
* Release date – expected in 2027.
Thus, over the past two months the project has lost two key leaders: first the creative director and then the lead developer. The new leadership under Jean Guesdon promises radical changes to the game’s concept, but specific details remain unknown.
