News about the next Linux kernel release

Linus Torvalds announced that the next kernel update will be numbered 7.0 and will follow version 6.19. This was not a shock to those who know that the kernel creator usually avoids numbers that cannot be counted “by hand and foot.” According to his usual pattern, Linux rarely gets numbers higher than x.19.

> *“Versions 3.x, 5.x, and 6.x ended with .19, and only 4.x reached .20”* – Torvalds notes.

In a recent message he added a small joke that “last week there were no big surprises, so 6.19 came out as expected—right when the U.S. is preparing to freeze over and watch another batch of TV commercials.” This hinted at the American Super Bowl.

What’s new in 7.0?

No radical changes are expected; the release will likely bring:

- Improved performance

- Support for the latest hardware

- Various minor tweaks

Version 6.19, the first in 2026, already included improvements to support older AMD video cards and Intel platforms. The 7.0 kernel is likely to become the foundation for popular distributions such as Ubuntu 26.04.

Thus Linux continues its usual path: stability, gradual refinement, and support for a wide range of devices.
