Microsoft has postponed announcing the release date for its new Xbox console due to an unstable memory market

Asha Sharma, head of Microsoft's division, explained why the company cannot yet specify a concrete launch window for the next Xbox model. According to her, pricing and availability decisions are directly tied to current supply constraints and the cost of DRAM and NAND chips.

How Memory Affects the Console
In an interview with Game File, Sharma likened the decision-making process to an equation: “memory cost is the variable that changes everything else.”

The key issue is a sharp rise in demand for memory chips. This surge is driven by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) workloads. As a result, supply chains have tightened and component prices have risen—impacting not only data centers but also consumer electronics.

Two Sides Compete for the Same Resources
Microsoft is simultaneously developing its own AI infrastructure and creating new gaming hardware. Both projects require massive amounts of high‑speed memory, so they “draw” from one limited pool.

Financial Risks from an Unstable Market
Memory determines the console’s core capabilities: balancing GPU bandwidth, CPU access, and data streaming. Any price fluctuation in memory affects the overall component budget, forcing Microsoft to compromise between target specifications, final price, and production volumes. Fixing specifications amid a volatile market carries significant financial risk.

What Is Already Known
- Development: studios have been promised development kits for Project Helix at the beginning of 2027.

- Release date: remains open. As TechSpot notes, an official Xbox launch date will be announced only after global memory competition stabilizes.

Thus, Microsoft must wait for market conditions to improve before setting a precise release window for the new console.
