The sun turned into a gigantic smiley face that smiles down on us.
The Sun “smiled” at Earth: how a gigantic “laughing” shape appeared on its surface
*February 13* – The Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Space Research published an image in which the Sun looks like a huge smiley face about 1.4 million km across. The shape sits directly above Earth and resembles a familiar human expression.
What exactly is being observed
- Two large active regions – each roughly ten times wider than Earth – flank the “smile.”
- A gigantic protrusion – a long bulge on the Sun’s surface extending about 500,000 km – creates the wide “curved” line that looks like a smile.

What it looks like
Scientists describe the resulting figure as friendly, yet with a slight hint of skepticism and irony. It is not a threat: the photo shows no signs of an impending anomalous event, but the increased solar activity still warrants close monitoring for possible flares and geomagnetic storms.
Why now
- Pareidolia – the human brain tends to see familiar shapes in random structures. That’s how the “smile” formed on the side of the Sun visible from Earth.
- At that moment Venus, Mercury, and Mars are beyond the observable side of the star, so the Sun’s “gaze” is directed exclusively at us.
Thus, this is a vivid example of how natural phenomena can evoke recognizable images in human consciousness. No direct danger to the planet has been identified yet, but scientists continue to monitor solar activity.
